Will EPDM make my building warmer in summer?

Black EPDM does absorb solar heat. For buildings with high summer cooling load, a white TPO or PVC system reflects more. Coatings can be applied to existing EPDM to add reflectivity.

How is EPDM repaired?

Primer-and-tape splice patches bond to field membrane permanently when cleaned and prepped correctly. Punctures repair in under an hour.

What thickness do you recommend?

.060 for most non-trafficked roofs; .090 for buildings with rooftop traffic, equipment, or 25+ year warranty targets.

About EPDM Roofing

EPDM has been protecting Indiana commercial buildings since the 1970s. It's the most field-proven single-ply on the market and still installs well for the right applications.

EPDM's chief strength is freeze-thaw durability and long material life — many .090 thickness installs in Indiana are still watertight at 30+ years. The black surface absorbs heat (the opposite of TPO's reflective profile), which can be a benefit for winter heat retention or a disadvantage for summer cooling load depending on building use.

We install fully-adhered, mechanically attached, and ballasted EPDM. Selection depends on substrate, wind zone, and slope. Seam strategy matters: modern primer-and-tape splices are durable and reliable when prepped correctly, but field seams are the single most common failure point on aging EPDM roofs — annual maintenance pays for itself.

EPDM is the right answer for buildings prioritizing 30+ year material life over reflectivity, for restoration of historic flat roofs, and for budget-driven installs where TPO premium isn't justified.
