Wind Damage to Your Roof in Indianapolis: What to Look For and What to Do

By 317 Restoration · August 12, 2026

Central Indiana storm season has not let up. The first of August brought another round of severe weather across the Indianapolis area, with downed trees, one that fell onto a house near downtown, and roof damage reported around Marion County. More storms have moved through since, and forecasters keep flagging the chance of severe weather into the middle of the month.

Of the three big threats to a roof around here, hail, wind, and water, wind is the one people underestimate the most. It does not leave the obvious dents hail does, but it quietly lifts, loosens, and tears at your roof in ways that turn into leaks fast. Here is what wind actually does to an Indianapolis roof, how to spot it, and what to do next.

How wind damages a roof

Wind rarely peels a whole roof off in one shot. What it usually does is work the edges. A gust gets under the bottom edge of a shingle, breaks the adhesive seal that holds it down, and lifts it. Even if that shingle lays back down and looks normal afterward, the seal is broken, and the next rain has a clear path underneath.

Straight-line winds of 50 to 70 miles per hour, the kind central Indiana sees several times each summer, are more than enough to do this across an entire slope. The damage is often invisible from the ground because the shingles settle back into place. That is exactly why so many wind claims get missed until a ceiling stain shows up weeks later.

Signs of wind damage to look for

You can check for most of this safely from the ground. Walk your property after a storm and look for:

  • Shingles that are missing entirely, especially along the edges and ridgeline of the roof

  • Shingles that look lifted, curled, or slightly out of alignment compared to the rows around them

  • Shingle debris, whole pieces or granules, in your yard, driveway, or gutters

  • Damaged, bent, or missing flashing around the chimney, vents, and skylights

  • A neighbor's roof or your own with a visible bare or discolored patch

  • Any new water staining on interior ceilings or in the attic after the storm

If you find shingle pieces in the yard after a windy storm, treat that as a strong sign to get the roof looked at. Those pieces came from somewhere.

What to do first if you have damage

If the wind created an obvious opening, missing shingles, an exposed section of decking, or an active leak, your homeowners policy most likely requires you to prevent further damage while you wait for repairs.

Take clear photos of the damage before you cover anything or clean anything up. Then get the opening tarped to keep water out. Tarping receipts are often reimbursable through your claim, and the photos protect you if the insurer questions the timeline later.

Water moves fast once it finds a way in. The gap between a simple repair and a much bigger one usually comes down to how quickly the opening got covered.

How wind claims work in Indiana

Wind damage is usually covered under an Indiana homeowners policy, but the details are where people get caught off guard. Coverage generally applies only when the damage came from a specific covered storm event and the roof was not already worn out, failing, or improperly installed. If the insurer decides the roof simply aged out, they will argue it is not covered. That is the single most common dispute in Indiana wind claims.

A few things that genuinely help your case:

Document the date. The August storms give a clear event to point to, and insurers want a specific timeline. Report the damage promptly rather than waiting, because late reporting gives a carrier room to argue the damage happened later or worsened because you did not act on it. Keep everything in one place, photos, receipts, emails, and any contractor report, so your claim is organized if questions come up.

It is also worth knowing that some Indiana policies use a separate percentage deductible for wind and hail, based on your dwelling coverage rather than a flat dollar amount. It is worth checking your policy so the number does not surprise you.

Be careful who you sign with

After a big storm, plenty of people start knocking on doors. Be cautious with anyone who promises a free roof in exchange for signing paperwork on the spot, especially assignment of benefits forms that hand over your claim rights. Read anything before you sign, and if a form is confusing, it is completely reasonable to take a day and ask questions first. The honest contractors will still be there tomorrow.

Why a professional inspection matters

An experienced roofer can tell the difference between a broken seal that will genuinely shorten your roof's life and cosmetic marks that will not, and can put that in a written assessment. That report becomes real evidence if your insurer disputes the claim or tries to call functional damage cosmetic. It also means you are not filing a claim you do not need, or missing damage that will cost you far more down the road.
