Central Indiana packed just about everything into this storm season: the tornadoes and damaging winds back in June, another round of severe weather on the first of August, and then the historic flooding in the middle of the month that put parts of the region underwater. It has been one of the roughest stretches in recent memory.
Now the weather is finally turning. September brings milder, drier days, and for most homeowners the storms have faded into the background. But here is the thing to understand: a roof can absorb a whole season of abuse and still look completely normal from the driveway. The damage is there. It just has not announced itself yet. That is exactly why the calm after a rough storm season is the smartest time to have your roof looked at.
Why summer storm damage stays hidden
Most storm damage does not look like a hole in the roof. Wind breaks the adhesive seals that hold shingles down, then lets them settle back into place looking fine. Hail knocks the protective granules off the surface and bruises the mat underneath, damage you would never notice from the ground. Days of heavy, wind-driven rain work at every small gap in the flashing and underlayment.
None of that leaks the day the storm passes. It leaks weeks or months later, once the compromised spot has had time to let water in. By the time a brown stain shows up on your ceiling, the water has usually been working on your decking and insulation for a while. The gap between catching it early and paying for it later is enormous, and it comes down almost entirely to timing.
Why fall is the right time to check
Late summer into fall is the ideal window for a roof check in central Indiana, for two reasons.
First, storm season is winding down, so an inspection now captures the full picture of what the summer did rather than a snapshot mid-season. Second, and more important, whatever the storms loosened or opened is about to meet an Indiana winter. Once the freeze-thaw cycle sets in, water gets into a small gap, freezes, expands, and pries it wider, over and over, all winter long. A minor flaw in September becomes a real leak by February. Catching it now, while the weather is mild, means the fix is small and the roof is ready before the cold arrives.
What to look for yourself, from the ground
You can gather a lot without ever getting on a ladder, which you should not do anyway. Once things are dry and safe, look for:
Shingles that are missing, cracked, curled, or slightly out of line with the rows around them
Shingle pieces or a buildup of granules in your gutters, downspouts, or yard
Dents or dings on gutters, downspouts, and metal flashing, a reliable sign hail struck the roof too
Bent, rusted, or loose flashing around the chimney, vents, and skylights
New water stains, discoloration, or sagging on interior ceilings
Daylight, damp insulation, or a musty smell in the attic on a bright day
If any of that turns up, it is worth getting a professional look before winter. And honestly, given how much this region went through this summer, it is worth a professional look even if none of it does.
What a professional inspection actually gives you
A good inspection is not about finding a reason to sell you a roof. It is about knowing exactly where you stand before winter, and getting it in writing.
An experienced roofer can tell the difference between damage that will genuinely shorten your roof's life and marks that are only cosmetic, and can document it clearly. If you do need to file a storm claim, that written assessment becomes real evidence. If your roof is fine, you get to stop worrying about it.
Either outcome is worth it. The worst position to be in is not knowing, and finding out during the first hard freeze.

Not every roof that took a beating this summer needs to be replaced. Depending on its age and the actual damage, the right answer might be a targeted roof repair, some routine maintenance, or, for an older roof near the end of its life, a full roof replacement before winter.
